Acne
Acne is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition characterized by the development of papules, blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, cysts and other types of pimples, areas most affected are the face, neck, chest, shoulders and back. It occurs when the pores of your skin become blocked with oil, dead skin or bacteria.
Acne is caused by over stimulation of the sebaceous glands resulting in over production of oil (sebum), this then causes pores to become blocked and the oil cannot reach the skins surface.
The acne infection is caused by a bacteria known as propionbacterium or P. Acnes live in the hair follicle and when these become blocked the bacteria multiplies causing irritation and inflammation resulting in spots.
IPL treats acne in two ways:
Firstly the light targets the P. acnes bacteria in the skin via a photo dynamic reaction which results in the selective destruction of these bacteria, and with successive treatments the rate of the destruction of the acne bacteria becomes greater than the growth of the bacteria leading to a reduction in the inflamed lesions that often cause significant scarring.
Secondly the when light from the IPL treatment is absorbed into the blood vessels which supply the sebaceous glands, the heat generated causes a reduction of blood flow within the capillaries resulting in a reduction in the production of oil within the skin.
What to expect
Following a cleanse of the area, coupling gel applied to the treatment area and the IPL handset will be used to deliver treatment. You will be asked to wear eye protection throughout the full treatment time.
How does it feel?
The sensation varies from client to client and is often described as a heat sensation, you can expect to experience mild redness of the skin immediately after treatment.
How long will it take?
A course of 4 treatments is recommended at 3 week intervals to achieve best results with an exfoliating facial performed 4 weeks prior to starting the course of treatment.
This process can be repeated if necessary, with single treatments needed to maintain results.
The treatment itself will take around 30 – 40 minutes.
